Dictionary

Gutnish (US: /ˈɡtnɪʃ/ GOOT-nish),[3] or rarely Gutnic[3] (gutniska or gutamål), refers to the original language spoken on parts of the islands of Gotland and Fårö.[4] The different dialects of Gutnish, while stemming from the Old Gutnish (Swedish: Forngutniska) variety of Old Norse, are sometimes considered part of modern Swedish. Gutnish exists in two variants, Mainland Gutnish (Swedish: Laumål), mostly spoken in the southern portion of Gotland, and Faroymal (Swedish: Fårömål), spoken on parts of the island of Fårö. UNESCO defines Gutnish as a "definitely endangered language" as of 2010.[

Gotlandština je severogermánský jazyk používaný obyvateli ostrova  Gotland  (Švédsko), někdy pokládaný za dialekt švédštiny. Starogotlandština se výrazně lišila od všech severogermánských jazyků. Byla v těsném kontaktu s východogermánštinou, konkrétně s gótštinou. V kulturní tradicii gotlandštiny je zajímavé, že si udržela runové písmo až do začátku 16. století, tedy mnohem déle než ve většině germánských jazyků.

Gutnish or Gotlandic is a Scandinavian language spoken on the island of Gotland in Sweden – generally considered to be a dialect of Swedish. Most Gotlanders speak Standard Swedish and contemporary Gutnish has been significantly influenced by it. It is an open issue whether the traditional Gutnish (sometimes called Older Gutnish) dialect, which was close to Old Gutnish, should be considered an independent language or a dialect of Swedish. There are major efforts to revive the traditional variety of Gutnish, and Gutamålsgillet (Gutnish Language Guild) is organizing classes and meetings for speakers of traditional Gutnish. According to the guild's webpage, there are now 1500 people using Gutnish on Facebook.
